Case 1 - Anxiety

2015-2017

Anxiety Prevents Living
Peter suffered from anxiety for as long as he could remember. The first time that he recognised it as anxiety was when he was 13 years old. He experienced it as an intense feeling and it took joy from his life, made him hesitant socially and at work, and generally made life a struggle. His preoccupation with feelings of anxiety and the thoughts that accompanied it, made him feel unfulfilled and living a life half lived.

Doing Despite Anxiety

Peter overcame his anxiety through a process of developing awareness and identifying what he valued. With the assistance of Laurie, Peter developed self-awareness through a process of self-regulation and reflection. Instead of spiralling into an automatic and negative thought stream, he was able to stop himself in the moment and become less reactive. This provided him space to develop curiosity around what he was experiencing and to separate himself from the anxious feeling – this is happening to me, it is not me, why am I feeling anxious?

An Opportunity for Change

With the assistance of Laurie, Peter was able to gain insights into why he was experiencing anxiety. Laurie was also able to help Peter gain insights into the person he wanted to be, the values he wanted to live, and the activities he could pursue to make those values part of his life. Peter was able to develop a self-belief that provided him a foundation to live a life worth living.

If you or someone you know is struggling with anxiety, don't hesitate to seek help. Therapy and self-awareness can make a significant difference, just like it did for Peter. Reach out to Laurie today and take the first step towards a more fulfilling life.

Case 2 - Anger

2015-2017

Anger Gets in the Way

Gary was finding himself getting angry at the slightest thing. This made him feel guilty as he was taking his feelings out on people he loved.

The Anger Cycle

Gary had experienced trauma as a child but had not connected the trauma to his anger towards others. Working with Laurie, he became aware that he lived in a world of ruminations – a process of continuously thinking the same thoughts and focusing on negative emotions, situations, or problems. With the help of Laurie, Gary was able to see that he had low self-esteem and generally low confidence in his ability to pursue what he really loved. As very often happens in trauma, Gary subconsciously blamed himself for what had happened. Although angry at what had happened and at the lack of recognition of his trauma and lack of support during the trauma, this caused a deep frustration, a form of anger at himself that was released through angry outbursts against those that he loved. This, in turn, made him feel guilty.

Pursuing What Matters

With help from Laurie, Gary was able to recognise when he was ruminating and move his thoughts towards how he could build a more fulfilling future. He was able to recognise the negative thoughts that he had of himself, and by engaging in activities aligned with his passion, he was able to build a new self-confidence. He experienced an emotional shift that gave him the courage at address tasks that anxiety would normally prevent him from doing. He became less angry and more focused on what mattered to him and his family.

Case 3 - Stress

2015-2017

The Stress Trap

Joe has a stressful job in emergency services that requires shift work and overtime. He is also stressed at home with children that have special needs and is constantly battling with doctor appointments while trying to balance the books. Joe’s stress has resulted in health issues and periods of low mood. Joe feels trapped.

In desperation, Joe sought the help of Laurie. He has found that talking about his problems allowed him to take different perspectives and the therapist asked questions that allowed Joe to open his mind to new possibilities. The sessions also allowed Joe to release pent up emotions, reduce the ruminations, and consider new options.

New Perspectives

The sessions allowed Joe to truly understand what was important to him and to fully understand the repercussions of continuing without change. He is now going through a process of change. He has taken the initiative to explore options that have opened new opportunities for him to reduce his stress levels. Where previously Joe experienced a fear of change, Joe now explores opportunities for making positive changes.

Case 4 - Diagnosed Disorder

A Diagnosis is Not Everything

Rosemary has multiple disorders that make her life difficult. She is easily distracted, experiences sensory overload, has fears about what others may think of her, and has feelings of inadequacy. Rosemary has allowed her diagnoses to define who she is but desperately wants to become a better person.

More than Coaching

Rosemary came to Laurie to gain help in organizing her life. She needed somebody that she could talk to so that she could organize her thoughts and create structure for the coming week. Laurie was to be her coach to help her get through the week. As the sessions progressed, Rosemary realized that although her cognitive and sensory problems made life hard to navigate, her problems in coping with life ran deeper than that.

A Valued Life

As she developed strategies to overcome her issues, she also developed a greater awareness of what was holding her back in life. Rosemary was able to start setting boundaries and to identify what was important to her and how to be assertive in achieving sought outcomes. In doing this, Rosemary was able to identify and express her values and become more self-confident. For Rosemary, life will always be harder than for most, but she has found something many do not have, a life that is aligned with her values.

Seeking help to overcome life’s difficulties can make life easier. But often the things that hold us back run deeper than physical or cognitive impairments. By working with Laurie, Rosemary was able to identify what was important to her. This, plus the coaching, gave her new self-confidence to pursue meaningful activities.
